If you read the last 2 blogs, you know that Jennifer Folsom, your next friend, is a very successful working mom.  Jennifer took time out her hectic schedule to share some of her endless wisdom on various topics including work/life balance and networking.

Q.  How did you manage to give birth and raise twins while you were in business school?

A. With the support of my husband (who, in pre-wireless days, hooked up a 50 ft DSL cable so that I could work while lying on my left side on bed rest), a few supportive professors (accepting video-taped presentations, independent studies, etc.), and my teammates (who moved group meetings to my house, always bringing food!).

Q. What advice do you have for women who want it all?

A. Sure, you can have it all, just not at the same time.  And why would you want to? Enjoy storming the boardroom, cherish those moments with your newborn. To everything there is a season.

Q. What advice do you have for job seekers?

A. This is a tricky market, but there are jobs out there. Clean up your social media presence, think creatively about your positioning and leverage your network now (before you really need it). If you don't have an internal resource advocating for you, walking your resume through the process, you simply won't get hired in this crowded market. Use the Search function on LinkedIn to find someone in your network, or your network's network, who currently works or has worked at the organization to which you are applying.

Q. What is the most common mistake people make when networking?

A. Here's the big 3: having too much to drink at a networking event,...

sticking to grab-n-go business card exchange without a compelling connection and forgetting the follow-up component. Stick to 1 glass of wine, exchange cards only after you've made a connection with someone, and FOLLOW UP! Written note, coffee date on the calendar and quarterly check in.

Q. When did you become comfortable with networking?

A. I guess I have always been comfortable meeting new people and making connections, but I remember in my second year of college at Randolph-Macon during sorority rush I was giving tips to a rather shy freshman and she   said, "wow, I heard you were really good at this but  man, you are!"

Q. How does a staffing firm survive during this though economic climate?

A.  You have to show that you provide them value, and even cost savings, every single day. I often say to potential clients, "hey, you need to hire someone, check with me first, we're likely cheaper than putting a posting on Monster.com and we'll do all the screening for you."

Q. What’s the best part of your job?

A. The very best part of my job is that I own my schedule. I work from home, work around the kids schedule and as long as clients are happy and candidates are getting jobs I know I'm doing the right thing. During the summer I scale back my hours to spend more time with the boys while they're home from school and yesterday we took an hour to throw rocks in a creek near our house on a hot August morning as the cicadas hummed along. Does it get any better than that?

Q.  Which actress would play you?

A.  Julia Roberts. It might sound trite but she's a fellow red-headed working mother of twins and a singleton. Plus, it'd be nice to see the view from above my 5 ft 0" frame.

Q. What word would your husband use to describe you?

A. Intense

Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

A. I hope to be working in my new home office, a converted shed much like Ina Gartner's barn, and that Momentum Resources is successful in 2-3 other markets with Directors in several industry sectors. I'll also be a mother of 3 teenage boys, pulling her hair out between sports schedules, constant grocery runs to fill an empty fridge and the thought that my two oldest will soon be leaving the nest. I hope that I'll look back and realize that I made all the right career moves to spend as much time as I could with them while they're with me.

Q. When is the last time you did something just for YOU?  And what was it?

A. I joined a soccer team! I'm playing on an Over 30 Women’s soccer team in DC (go Smash!) and I love that it's 100% about me. It's a whole new crowd of people to meet and get to know, it's physically daunting (2 45 minute halves, often with little or no subs) and it's helped me to carve out Saturday mornings as my own. We go to brunch afterwards, and I have time to run a solo errand or two and maybe even get a pedicure. The older boys got to see me play my last game of the spring season and I scored. Nothing was better than hearing "Go Mom!" from the bleachers.
